Do you share your clothes?
Growing up, I never really shared my clothes with my sister although we are close in age. Every item that was bought for me was mine; to wear, to wash and to repeat. I mean it wasn’t like we were miserly or anything, it’s just how it has always been. I had nothing against sharing, it just never really occurred to us. Now looking back, we were an odd bunch. This extended to our baatis. Nobody shared a baati, not even from our mother.
Fast forward a couple of years and I am now staying with my cousins. This household was very different. The baatis got washed and then it was up for grabs. Everyone’s baatis was everyone's. At one point, I was convinced there was actually no ownership of them and they were intentionally bought to circulate between 4 sisters and a mother. Fun fact: Years later when I brought it up, I found out that they all knew which was theirs and they intentionally washed it for themselves. Only to not find it on the washing line but instead worn by their sister. The same cycle continues to this day.
In this economy, with the cost-of-living crisis and all, pooling resources and collectively sharing clothing items between family and friends, does not seem like a bad idea at all. I mean you would have to ensure sizing, styling and maintenance of the garment(s) in question are agreed upon. But let’s be honest, it is not a bad idea, right? Even I, someone who hasn’t shared my clothes at all, have to agree!
The baati is a pretty funny garment in the sense it is perfect for sharing. Outrageously long and wide, you can lend your baati to anyone. That is why you are offered to change into a baati when you visit a Somali house, especially if you are visiting to help with cooking, cleaning or visiting for longer than an hour. And the baati that is being offered is generally from the stack of freshly cleaned baatis of the host, nothing too fancy.
I wouldn’t be surprised if someone asked me: you’ve offered your baati to your guests but never to your sister? My answer would be; yes, weird I know!
